Eight long-term IRA prisoners allowed out over Christmas will be freed permanently under early release terms announced by the Irish government in a move geared to foster better relations with Sinn Fein.

A ninth prisoner, Gerry Hamilton from Londonderry, let out on the same Christmas terms, is also to be released today having completed his sentence.
