THE Independent has won the Prix Stendhal, Europe's premier journalism award. The commendation, for reporting on European society, was presented yesterday in Seville.
The jury judged that a report by the Independent on the Maastricht treaty last December was 'remarkable'. It added: 'The admirably judged content of the survey was enhanced by skilful presentation and excellent typography and graphics. The article was a model of what can be achieved by brilliant journalism directed to a serious end.'
The jury included Lord McGregor of Durris, chairman of the Press Complaints Commission, and other European politicians, academics and businessmen. The prize, run by the Geneva-based Adelphi Foundation, was presented on the last day of the Expo '92 exhibition.
