NEW DELHI - Fresh sectarian violence is expected in India after the calling of a general strike today in response to the arrest of five Hindu fundamentalist politicians, writes Tim McGirk.

The Prime Minister, Narasimha Rao, is holding them responsible for unleashing hordes of militants who tore down the 16th-century Ayodhya mosque on Sunday.

Since then, more than 460 people have been killed and 2,000 injured in mob violence.

Dozens of Hindu temples were destroyed yesterday in Bangladesh and Pakistan. The governments in Dhaka and Islamabad called general strikes yesterday to protest against India's failure to defend the mosque.
