Indonesia's Air Force said the country would proceed with its purchase of 16 British Hawk fighters despite a debilitating economic crisis, the official Antara news agency reported yesterday.
Antara quoted Colonel Edy Haryoko, commander of the Simpang Tiga military airbase in Pekanbaru, capital of Riau province on Sumatra, as saying the deal would go ahead and the planes would arrive soon. The agency said the 16 jets, a mix of fighters and trainers, would be stationed in West Kalimantan province in the Indonesian part of Borneo. It gave no further details.
