The Irish President Mary Robinson will step down on 12 September to take up her new job as UN High Commissioner for Refugees, it was announced yesterday .

The election for Ireland's next president will be held in November, as previously scheduled, coinciding with the end of Mrs Robinson's seven- year term as President.
