COLIN JACKSON gave Britain their third gold medal of the World Athletics Championships and set a world record last night when he won the 110 metres hurdles from his fellow Briton Tony Jarrett, writes Clive White.

Only two world records have been set at the championships in Stuttgart, both by Britons.

Jackson's victory - in a time of 12.91sec, which lopped one-hundredth of a second of Roger Kingdom's four-year-old record - came hard on the heels of Sally Gunnell's record-breaking run in the 400 metres hurdles on Thursday. Linford Christie, the British team captain, had shown the way, getting a gold medal last Sunday in the 100 metres with the second fastest run in history.

There was further British joy last night when John Regis won the silver medal in the 200 metres to become the first of his countrymen to run under 20 seconds, beating Carl Lewis into third place. The gold went to Frankie Fredericks, of Namibia.

The victory for Jackson, long regarded as the world's best hurdler, made amends for his disappointments in the last World Championships in Tokyo and last year's Barcelona Olympics. 'I knew it was going to be my race - I've never been so certain about anything in my life,' he said. 'I know I can go faster still.'

There was also a bronze medal for Britain when Mick Hill was promoted to third place in the javelin after a rival was disqualifed for taking drugs.
