Companies in the financial sector are preparing to shed more than 20,000 jobs in 1996 despite expected profits for the major clearing banks of more than pounds 7bn, according to the Banking Insurance and Finance Union. The cuts would come on top of 120,000 job losses over the last six years in an industry which has faced massive rationalisation.
