RETAILING group Kingfisher has announced plans for a pounds 750m expansion that will create 20,000 jobs at 125 new DIY stores under its B&Q Warehouse chain.

Losses:

1 Sheffield: 260 jobs to go at stainless steel manufacturer Avesta Sheffield.

2 Hull, E Yorks: 96 jobs to go at surgical services firm Smith and Nephew.

3 London: ANZ Investment Bank to cut up to 70 jobs.

4 Mansfield, Notts: 200 jobs to go at Britain's oldest pit, Annesley Bentinck colliery.

5 Darlington, Co Durham: 234 jobs to go at Darlington & Simpsons, part of British Steel.

6 New Milton, Hants: Geeco, manufacturer of the world's first plastic watering can, to shut with 70 jobs lost.

Gains:

7 Livingston, Dunfermline, Scotland, and across UK: 1,700 new jobs at broadcaster BSkyB.

8 Nationwide: 20,000 jobs at Kingfisher DIY subsidiary B&Q.

9 England, and Cardiff, Wales: retailer Peacock to create 400 jobs.

10 Okehampton, Devon: Waitrose supermarket group to create 250 jobs.

11 Mapperley, Notts; Acle, Norwich; Woodhall Spa, Lincs; and Bromham, Beds: Budgens supermarket group to create 400 jobs.

12 London: 175 new jobs at book retailer Waterstone.

13 Midlands: 550 new jobs created by Whitbread at 25 new Travel Inns.

14 Londonderry, N Ireland: J Sainsbury supermarket group to create 350 jobs.

15 Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne & Wear: more than 150 new jobs at Gill Airways.

16 Sheffield, S Yorks: Government to create 100 jobs at University for Industry.
