Your two correspondents seem to justify sending plutonium into space (Letters, 18 May). This deserves a reply.
On 6 October, Nasa plans to launch the Cassini space probe. It will carry as much as 72lbs of plutonium. There is a real danger of launch failure and a greater danger of accidental re-entry.
We have to ask why Nasa and powerful American business interests are so intent on taking such a risk. According to CND, the real motive could be that nuclear weapons in space (the so-called "Star Wars" programme) may be revived and benefit from this "research".
