Pressure increased on the Secretary of State for Agriculture, Douglas Hogg, to tighten "mad- cow disease" regulations after Professor Sir Bernard Tomlinson, a leading brain scientist and government adviser, warned that bovine spongiform encepha-lopathy could be transmitted to humans. Labour's agriculture spokesman, Gavin Strang, echoed his call for beef offal to be banned from the food chain.
