The wedding of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones has prompted excitement of almost royal proportions in Wales.

The wedding of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones has prompted excitement of almost royal proportions in Wales.

Not since Richard Burton married Elizabeth Taylor has such a glamorous event occupied the Welsh media.

"Its an absolutely massive story," said Tim Gordon, assistant editor of Wales on Sunday. "Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas have completely taken over the press here all of this week ... They're our Posh and Becks."

The Western Mail is similarly excited: "We are having a bit of fun with it," admits Neil Fowler, the editor of the paper.

But the mood of the South Wales Echo in Cardiff is more subdued than at the rival South Wales Evening Post, based in Swansea.

"There's not a lot of love lost between the two [cities]," said Robin Fletcher, editor of the Echo. "We will be making Charlotte Church, not Catherine Zeta Jones, our main story.

Mr Fletcher added: "[Ms Zeta Jones is] not even a top-drawer Hollywood actress like Meg Ryan or Julia Roberts. She's not spoken of in the same breath. In Swansea its different, this is their biggest story since Dylan Thomas died."
