The Independent's Chief Sports Writer has been named Sports Writer of the Year at the annual What the Papers Say awards.

Lawton was praised as 'a consistently elegant writer' who moved the judges with an especially powerful piece on the death of England World Cup winner Alan Ball, which, they felt, perfectly captured a bygone era.
