The adult comic Viz announced yesterday that it was ending the life of these cult caricatures in protest at a film version of the cartoon strip. Tracey and Sandra, obese women created by Viz cartoonists 15 years ago, will make their last appearance in the magazine's silver jubilee edition next week.

But Chris Donald, the founding editor, will not be holding his breath. "I am not at all sad to see them go. They were always my least favourite characters," he said. "I tried retiring them many times. Hopefully this is a done deal."

The announcement follows the cinema release on Friday of Fat Slags , described by critics as "no story, just a series of tasteless, witless gags" and "officially one of the worst films ever made".

The movie, which stars Sophie Thompson, sister of Emma, and Smack the Pony star Fiona Allen, follows Tracey and Sandra on a trip to London and their rise to fame and fall from grace. Geri Halliwell and Naomi Campbell make cameo appearances.

The magazine said its staff were "appalled" with the end result when they saw Fat Slags in the cinema over the weekend. Viz had no control over content after selling the rights six years ago.

Graham Dury, the editor of Viz , said: "I'm sorry to say that the Fat Slags are no more. After seeing this crass and ill-conceived film I just don't feel like drawing them again."

But there were signs that the man-eating Geordies might one day enjoy a resurrection. One insider said their position might be reconsidered after a "pretty enormous" outcry from fans.
