Simon Kelner, the editor-in-chief of The Independent , has been named Media Achiever of the Year by the advertising industry bible, Campaign .
Claire Beale, the editor of Campaign , praised the paper's transformation to a compact format, which she said had resulted in a "seemingly inexorable circulation rise".
She added that Mr Kelner "was one of only two national newspaper editors to take a stance against the war in Iraq - and the only one to do so with uncompromising principle and integrity".
