An American has died of meningitis 10 days after he began a degree course in Scotland. Brian Bainbridge, 27, a physiotherapy student at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, died on Saturday, two hours after being taken to hospital from halls of residence at Woolmanhill.

Mr Bainbridge, of Maryland, arrived in Scotland with a group of 21 American students - all of whom have been given antibiotics. Other students at Woolmanhill have been advised that only people in close contact with Mr Bainbridge needed medication.
