A former British Rail storekeeper was named as the new leader of Doncaster Council yesterday. Malcolm Glover replaces Peter Welsh, who resigned following a district auditor's report which raised questions about overseas trips and expenses among a small group of senior councillors.Mr Glover, 46, a councillor for 15 years, said his first challenge was to restore the integrity of councillors, officers and the council with the public.

"I am under no illusion that we can make dramatic changes overnight, but I am determined to work with council colleagues and officers to promote the good work and services this authority already provides and build upon its strengths," he said. His deputy is Colin Wedd, 59. He replaces Ray Stockhill, who resigned at the same time as Mr Welsh last week.
