Police last night appealed for the mother of a new-born boy abandoned behind a public lavatory in east London to come forward.

The baby, less than 24 hours old, was wrapped in a white towel. A street cleaner found him in Goodmayes Park. Last night he was in a stable condition in a hospital resuscitation unit.
