Pay for National Health Service bureaucrats has risen by £1bn in the past five years - from £1.2bn to £2.2bn - the Labour MP Alan Milburn claimed.

He said the pay bill for England's nurses fell over the past year, but the cost of managers' salaries jumped by 22 per cent.
