Five members of the elite Household Cavalry are facing disciplinary action after testing positive for drugs, it was reported last night. The soldiers were caught after senior officers in the Queen's bodyguard regiment ordered a surprise dawn test of all 300 members. It is thought that the screening showed up traces of cannabis in the five soldiers' blood.

"This is deeply embarrassing. The Household Cavalry has an elite role. It has shamed the regiment," one army source said. Two of those caught were already planning to leave the Army, it was claimed.

The mounted Household Cavalry, with its distinctive red uniforms and gold helmets, is made up of the Blues and Royals and the Life Guards - the oldest regiments in Britain. It is based in London's Hyde Park.
