Discovery of a handgun inside a jail provoked a major security alert yesterday. The gun and seven bullets were found in a crevice in a wall in the grounds of Coldingley Prison, near Woking, Surrey. A full search of the jail using sniffer dogs is expected to take up to two days.

Woolwich Crown Court was told yesterday that six men escaped from a top security jail when a surveillance camera was deactivated after an inmate complained that it violated his privacy.

The escapees from Whitemoor, Cambridgeshire, cut a hole in security fencing no longer covered by the camera. An officer was shot in the stomach during the break out in 1994. Peter Sherry, 31; Liam O'Dhuibur, 34; Liam McCotter, 33; Gilbert McNamee, 36, Paul Magee, 48, and Andrew Russell, 34, the only non-IRA defendant, all deny "breaking prison" and firearms charges.
