Damien Hirst passed the first test of the buying power of his work at auction with flying colours but not, perhaps, the fanfare Christie's had hoped. His first major piece to come up at auction, Adrenochrome Semicarbazone Sulfonate, consists of rows of pink, yellow, green and blue circles of paint on a white background.

Consigned by the Cologne dealer Luis Campana, and estimated at pounds 8,000 to pounds 12,000, the 1992 painting sold to an anonymous Italian collector with a telephone bid for pounds 32,200.
