A former senior judge claims a firearm could provide the best self-protection against burglars and added that if he had a gun and was facing an intruder he might be forced to pull the trigger.

In an interview for Panorama to be screened tonight, Judge Brian Woods said the best and most effective method of self-defence was a gun.

"If I'd got something that was lethal and handy, I suppose you would threaten the other person with it and hope that would be enough, and if it weren't, well then I suppose you've got to pull the trigger," he said.

Judge Woods presided over the 1988 case of Ted Newbery, 76, who was acquitted of intentionally wounding a 21-year-old intruder with a shotgun on his allotment at Ilkeston, Derbyshire. PA
