Robin Denniston's excellent obituary of Alan Maclean [29 September] emphasised Alan's role in Muriel Spark's career, writes Mike Shaw.

They were innocent days. I remember a telex sent to Alan from Macmillan's office in India which might not be so readily understood today: "PLEASE SEND AT ONCE FIFTY BOUND UNJACKETED GIRLS OF SLENDER MEANS".
