May I add to Brian Cathcart's excellent obituary of Hans Bethe [9 March]? writes Professor Ernst Sondheimer. Before turning to nuclear physics in the 1930s, Bethe also did important work in what is nowadays called solid-state physics. In particular, the review article on the electron theory of metals, by Bethe and Arnold Sommerfield but mostly written by Bethe, published in the 1933 Handbuch der Physik, was an earlier form of "Bethe's Bible". I had to immerse myself in it when I started my own research after the end of the Second World War.
