The popular Italian singer-songwriter Lucio Dalla died of an apparent heart attack yesterday in Switzerland during a European concert tour. He was 68.

Born in March 1943 in Bologna, Dalla wrote songs for himself and others, as well as for films. His song "Caruso" sold 9 million copies worldwide. Luciano Pavarotti sang the song in 1992 at a concert in Italy with Dalla, who toured abroad frequently. He sometimes toured with another well-loved Italian songwriter, Francesco De Gregori.
