Norman Thelwell

There was one small but notable omission in Martin Plimmer's fine and detailed obituary of Norman Thelwell [10 February], writes Bernard Smith. The first exposure to his name and work for many thousands of teenagers in the 1950s was his little strip cartoon "Chicko", which he produced for Eagle. It was there without fail every week for years, from 14 April 1950, at the foot of the editorial page. It must have been one of his first, and no doubt very welcome, regular commissions following his graduation from Liverpool College of Art.
