Your obituary of Rudolf Augstein [by Sebastian Borger, 8 November] does not mention that it was John Chaloner – the press chief in Hanover in 1946, serving with the 30 Information Control Unit of the Rhine Army – who started the forerunner magazine Diese Woche that soon was transformed into Der Spiegel, writes Leo Brawand.
Being the last of those young men from 1946 who were at the start in Hanover, I feel the British could be proud of that contribution to our democracy.
