AN INVESTIGATION was under way last night after a charred body was found following an explosion at Chelsea Football Club's stadium, Stamford Bridge.

Police forensic scientists and fire crews were called to theground in south-west London to investigate the blast that ripped through part of the club's West Stand at around 8.15pm.

The force of the explosion smashed the urinals and sinks in the men's toilets, at the corner of the stand, which is currently being rebuilt. A manhole cover just outside the lavatory had been blown off and a nearby pile of debris, possibly rubbish, had caught alight.

Inspector Wayne Henry, of the Metropolitan Police, said the body, which was found by fire crews in the lavatory, had not yet been identified. He said the explosion did not appear to have been caused by a bomb.
