The new tenant of the villa where Oscar Pistorius shot dead Reeva Steenkamp has apologised over an online video in which he declared it would be turned into a party house where “hot girls can invite themselves”.

David Scott, 33, and Kagiso Mokoape, 23, had posted a video online of them wandering round the luxury Silver Woods country estate – including footage of them inside the bathroom where Ms Steenkamp died in 2013.

In the face of an online backlash, Mr Scott has posted an apology – of sorts – online, saying that the video had been about “celebrating life”.

Scott initially wrote, half in Afrikaans and half in English, on Facebook: “I am dying of laughter, this is a bit out of proportion, well, u know what they say ... there’s no such thing as bad publicity! He he.”

He added: “The house is about celebrating life and to be reminded about how precious it is! Not to make a mockery.”

A later apology went further, however, saying the video had sent “totally the wrong message”.

The video, which was posted on YouTube, has now been set to private. It was also shown on South African TV station Netwerk24 and prompted a backlash.

In an online poll for South African website IOL, 52% described the video as “disgusting”, 42% said it was “no big deal” and 6% described it as “cool”.

In the film, Mr Scott was filmed saying that “hot girls can invite themselves” while Mr Mokoape said that “it is going to go down here” at weekends.

A spokeswoman for Pistorius – who could be released by the South African parole board this Thursday after serving around a year for manslaughter – declined to comment on the video to IOL, beyond describing it as “bizarre”.
