Pay ruling bonanza for women

Any female worker who was paid less than a man who succeeds her can claim compensation under equal-pay laws, the Employment Appeal Tribunal has decided.

Joanne Connaughton, director of music at St Marie's Cathedral, Sheffield, claimed equal pay with a man who succeeded her. Ms Connaughton's basic salary was pounds 11,138, with a travel allowance of pounds 1,145, while her successor was appointed on pounds 20,000. The diocese of Hallam agreed to pay her pounds 10,000 compensation and promised to take account of guidance from the Equal Opportunities Commission in future. Barrie Clement
