Pay victory for

maternity woman

A woman who missed out on a pay rise because she was on maternity leave won her fight against discrimination yesterday.

The European Court of Justice in Luxembourg ruled that Joan Gillespie clearly qualified for the increase, like any other employee - but it said there was nothing in European Union law to require employers to pay women at full rate during their maternity leave.

Ms Gillespie began her fight after taking leave from Ulster's Northern Health and Social Services Board, and then finding she could not get the pay rise negotiated under a collective agreement.
