Action around Bethlehem Children with Disability was founded in 1986 after one of the organisation's trustees spent a year working as a physiotherapist helping disabled people and children in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip. Since then ABCD has helped to build a rehabilitation centre, near Bethlehem, where disabled children living in both areas are medically treated. The centre is the core unit for an expanding community programme, including six day-care centres, offering families with disabilities much-needed special equipment - including artificial limbs, walking aids and adapted seating - and physiotherapy. It also sponsors local students at Bethlehem University's Physiotherapy Department to help with its work.
