Sir John Coles, to be Permanent Under-Secretary of State and Head of the Diplomatic Service.

Mr Paul Bergne, to be Ambassador to the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Mr James AH Moore, to be Executive Director of the US/UK Fulbright Commission.

Professor Arnold Wolfendale, to be President of the Institute of Physics.

Mr James David Demack, to be full- time Chairman of Value Added Tax Tribunals.

Miss Diana Faber, to be a Law Commissioner, with particular responsibility for commercial law.

Mr Jeremy Lee Thomas, to be joint district judge for the districts of the Cardiff, Blackwood, Newport, Bargeod, Chepstow, Monmouth and Pontypool County Courts, and in the District Registry of the High Court at Cardiff, Blackwood and Newport.

Mrs Gillian Marguerite Marley, to be joint district judge for the the districts of the Harrogate and York County Courts, and in the District Registry of the High Court at York.

The Princess of Wales, to be a Vice- President of the British Red Cross.
