Caitlyn Jenner's mother Ester thought her daughter, formerly known as Bruce Jenner, had transitioned for money

Not everyone believed the late Bruce Jenner was genuine when he first announced that he was transitioning into a woman.

Now known as Caitlyn, after introducing herself for the first time on the cover of Vanity Fair yesterday, she revealed that even her own mother Ester had doubts about her motivations.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Ester said: “I woke up one night and all I was thinking about is: Why is it necessary (for Caitlyn) to go through all these surgeries? Is this all about making money? And that was bothering me.”

She said that her questioning stemmed from the publicity seeking lifestyle Jenner had once lived when married to Kris Jenner and a star of Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

“He’s lived a life the last 25 years – and I don’t know if it was both he and Kris or mainly Kris – it seemed like their lifestyle was about money; that’s why it came to my mind.”

However, Caitlyn, who reportedly took no fee for her Vanity Fair cover, said her decision was as far removed from the publicity machine as it was possible for her to get.

“'Oh, she’s doing a stupid reality show,” she said. “She’s She’s doing it for the money. She’s doing this, she’s doing that.' I’m not doing it for money.

“I’m doing it to help my soul and help other people. If I can make a dollar, I certainly am not stupid. [I have] house payments and all that kind of stuff. I will never make an excuse for something like that. Yeah, this is a business. You don’t go out and change your gender for a television show. O.K, it ain’t happening. I don’t care who you are.”

Her decision has already been honoured. Caitlyn will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at this year’s ESPY awards.

The show for sporting achievement, which will take place on 15 July, will honour the former Olympic gold medallist.

It is reported she will make her red carpet debut that evening.

“In the past few months, the overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world for my journey has been incredible,” said Jenner in a statement.

The news was announced on Monday, the same day that Caitlyn Jenner made her debut on the cover of Vanity Fair.

The sports awards show, will take play on July 15th , and will honour Olympic gold medallist Caitlyn - who could be making her red carpet debut that night.

“In the past few months, the overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world for my journey has been incredible,” said Jenner in a statement.

“However, being honored with this award, which is named after one of my heroes, is truly special. For the first time this July, I will be able to stand as my true self in front of my peers.”

The Caitlyn Jenner issue of Vanity Fair is out on 12 June.
