Cheryl Cole's husband Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini wins privacy pay out for 'unjustifiable' intrusion into his personal life

Cheryl Fernandez-Versini's husband, Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini, has won substantial damages over a “deeply intrusive” article about his personal life.

The club promoter launched legal action against Reveal publisher the National Magazine Company Ltd over the printing three-page spread that included private details about his French childhood, late mother, relationship with the X Factor judge and their personal finances in July.

The High Court judge heard from his solicitor, Callum Galbraith,that he had no desire to be known as a public figure, despite his marriage to the famous pop singer.

"Publicity was the inevitable, but avoidable, consequence for the claimant in so far as Reveal's article is concerned," Galbraith said.

"Despite describing the article as the product of an investigation, at its core was a combination of speculation, gossip and private information.

"As Reveal now accepts, the article constituted an unjustifiable and unnecessary intrusion into the claimant's private and family life.

"The only reason for it being published at all was the fame and notoriety of the claimant's wife which is, of course, no justification for a publication that in truth should never have been made. Reveal now accepts this."

Neither Fernandez-Versini or his wife were present at the hearing, and the sum of damages awarded to him has not been disclosed.

Aimee Nisbet, the solicitor acting on behalf of Reveal magazine, agreed not to republish the article or any such feature on the couple in the future.

Reveal also apologised for any distress or hurt it had caused.
