Chinese New Year: Mark Zuckerberg announces daughter Max's second name

Zuckerberg and Chan have named their daughter Chen Mingyu

Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan have unveiled their daughter Max’s new name to mark the Chinese New Year.

The Facebook CEO spoke fluently in Mandarin to welcome in the Year of the Monkey and announce his daughter’s second, Chinese name in a video message on Facebook.

Sitting between Max and taking it in turns to speak, Zuckerberg and Chan explained the symbolism of her second name. ‘Ming’ means bright and ‘yu’ means universe.

Happy Lunar New Year from Priscilla, Max and me! In the Year of the Monkey, I hope you and all your loved ones find happiness, health and good fortune.

“Her name is Chen Mingyu,” Zuckerberg said.

“Chen, after her mother's family name, and Mingyu represents our hope for a brighter tomorrow for the world.”

Zuckerberg welcomed his first child into the world in December with a lengthy essay pledging to make it a better place for her to live in by giving away 99 per cent of his Facebook shares throughout his lifetime.
