Dave Goldberg dead: Award-winning American football writer dies aged 73

The writer worked with the Associated Press for four decades

Award-wining American football writer Dave Goldberg has died, his family have confirmed. He was 73.

Goldberg passed away at the Northern Westchester Hospital on Sunday, after he suffered complications following hip surgery late last month, his family said.

One of the nation’s top football writers, Goldberg retired from the Associated Press as its lead NFL after in 2009. During his 41 years at the agency, he also served as an assistant bureau chief, correspondent, editor and supervisor.

Highly respected by three NFL commissioners, team owners and executives, coaches and players, Goldberg often was sought by his peers for his expertise -and was a leading voice on the Pro Football Hall of Fame committee.

His insight and storytelling highlighted his writing, whether he was covering sports or politics, while his worldly view of sports brought a freshness and edginess to his reporting, an Associated Press report said of Goldberg.
