Donald Trump accused of politicising death of Dwyane Wade’s cousin in 'opportunistic' tweet

Donald Trump has been accused of politicising the death of Dwyane Wade’s cousin in Chicago by responding to news of the fatal shooting with a tweet advising African-American people to vote for him in the forthcoming election.

Nykea Aldridge was fatally shot on Friday while pushing her baby in a pram. The mother-of-four was wounded when two men walked up and fired shots at a third man but hit Aldridge in the head and arm, according to the Associated Press. Police said she was not the intended target.

NBA star Wade wrote on Twitter: “My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. Four kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough.”

Mr Trump reacted with a tweet referencing his efforts to reach out to black voters at rallies in recent weeks, writing: "Just what I have been saying. African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!"

Former Destiny’s child singer Michelle Williams branded his comment “an absolute disgrace”.

His tweet was branded “despicable” and “opportunistic" by other tweeters.

Mr Trump’s account followed up the tweet with a second, more considered post expressing condolences to Wade and his family.

“My condolences to Dwyane Wade and his family, on the loss of Nykea Aldridge. They are in my thoughts and prayers."

A representative for Mr Trump did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
