A Grey’s Anatomy actor has come out as bisexual for the first time and urged young people to accept and embrace their identities.

Sara Ramirez, who played the role of bisexual character Dr Callie Torres on the massively popular ABC program, disclosed the news in a speech at the True Colors Fund 40 To None Summit in Los Angeles, sharing the speech in a Twitter post.

The event she had been attending was held to raise awareness around the 40 per cent of youth experiencing homelessness who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender and end the disproportionate burden felt by LGBT youth.

“So many of our youth experiencing homelessness are youth whose lives touch on many intersections - whether they be gender identity, gender expression, race, class, sexual orientation, religion, citizenship status,” the 41-year-old wrote.

“And, because of the intersections that exist in my own life: Woman, multi-racial woman, woman of color, queer, bisexual, Mexican-Irish American, immigrant, and raised by families heavily rooted in Catholicism on both my Mexican and Irish sides”.

“I am deeply invested in projects that allow our youth’s voices to be heard, and that support our youth in owning their own complex narratives so that we can show up for them in ways they need us to.”

The Mexico-born actress, who rose to fame for her role in the Broadway musical Spamalot, has been married to her husband and banker Ryan Debolt since 2012. She played the bisexual character of Dr Callie Torres on Grey's Anatomy for ten years before leaving the programme this year.

Fans commended Ramirez for coming out, with one Twitter user writing: "By being your authentic self, you give others the room and courage to do so as well. Thank you"
