Kanye West confirms plans to run for presidency in 2020 even though he 'hates politics'

Kanye West has confirmed that his pledge to run for US presidency in 2020 was entirely serious.

West told Vanity Fair he is “definitely” still thinking of running for office in five years time.

The confirmation follows the 38-year-old’s declaration in August at the MTV VMAs.

While on stage to collect his Video Vanguard award, West announced: “I have decided in 2020 to run for president” before dropping his microphone and walking off stage.

In the interview West proposed a new method of campaigning, saying: “When I run for president, I’d prefer not to run against someone. I would be like ‘I want to work with you’".

He continued: “I think all the people running right now have something that each of the others needs. But the idea of this separation and this gladiator battle takes away from the main focus that the world needs help and the world needs all the people in a position of power or influence to come together.”

West also said he thinks about whether he would have to sacrifice fashion designing when he runs, saying it’s important that he stays “creative” as “the whole point is to have someone [in office] that’s creative”; however it currently takes up a lot of his time.

Despite the rapper’s ambition for a change in career path he admitted that, at present, he hates politics.

“I hate politics. I’m not a politician at all. I care about the truth and I just care about human beings”, he said.

It is currently unclear who West has endorsed for president in 2016. He was previously included in a selfie with his wife, Kim Kardashian-West, and Hillary Clinton, which Kardashian-West captioned “#HillaryForPresident”, after the couple watched the former Secretary of State speak.

However in the Vanity Fair interview he said Republican candidate Ben Carson was “the most brilliant guy”.

Following West’s announcement in August, Donald Trump said he’ll never say a bad thing about him because “he [West] loves Trump. He goes around saying, ‘Trump is my all-time hero.’ He says it to everybody. So Kanye West – I love him.”
