Katie Hopkins has attacked Jessica Ennis-Hill in her latest campaign to defend disgraced footballer Ched Evans.

The controversial pundit has criticised Ennis-Hill after the Olympic gold medallist called for her name to be removed from Sheffield United’s Bramall Lane stand if the footballer were to be re-signed.

“Jessica Ennis is Supreme judge in the court of public opinion. Being able to run fast & jump high makes you super qualified. Who knew?” she wrote on Twitter.

Hopkins’ tweet follows news that Ennis-Hill received rape threats after making a public stand against convicted rapist Ched Evans.

South Yorkshire Police have launched an investigation into the online threats, which included messages such as “Saying she will remove her name if Ched Evans is signed. I hope he rapes her” and “@J_Ennis hope Ched Evans gets you you little slut.”

Hopkins waded into the public debate about whether Ched Evans should be allowed to return to Sheffield United permanently earlier this week, tweeting in favour of the player re-signing to the club.

She also attacked Sheffield United patron Charlie Webster, who resigned as a patron of the club after Evans was allowed to return to training.

But her tweets were condemned by a Rape charity for trivialising sexual violence against women and girls.

“Katie Hopkins has evidently built her personal brand on making ill-informed, offensive and hateful public comments,” a spokesperson for Rape Crisis said.

“In light of the classist and racist views she’s unapologetically voiced, we perhaps shouldn’t be surprised if she now adds rape apology and misogyny to the attitudes she’s willing to espouse in her tireless quest for self-publicity.”

Sarah Green of End Violence Against Women Coalition added that Hopkins’ comments were “profoundly disrespectful to Webster”, who was sexually assaulted as a teenager.
