Michaela Strachan 'feeling great' following double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery

The television presenter underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer

Michaela Strachan is back in good health following breast reconstruction after a double mastectomy.

The Springwatch host revealed in the Mail on Sunday’s You magazine that she underwent the operation after being diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year.

"I'm feeling great - I wrote that article for You magazine myself six weeks ago and since then I have had reconstruction so I am feeling 'perky,'" she said.

She was told that she was suffering from the disease after having a mammogram.

"24 hours later I got that call that anyone who has had cancer will remember, that call that you get saying, 'Terribly sorry, it's come back positive, you have cancer,'" Strachan said on ITV’s Lorraine this morning.

"And at that stage you don't know how bad it is, and of course you do that whole what if thing - 'What if it has gone into my back?'

"I had terrible back pain from doing Splash! and I thought maybe that's not just Splash!, maybe I've got secondary cancer and maybe I'm not going to make it - all those thoughts go through your head and it is a very frightening time."

She described the diagnosis as a "frightening" experience.

"I only took in every fifth word or so," she recalled in You magazine. "The one word that registered was 'cancer'."

"I didn't think I felt too emotional about losing (my breasts)," she said. "But knowing I would in the next few days, I found myself wearing tight top and celebrating them. As Joni Mitchell sang, 'Don't it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you've got till it's gone.'"

Strachan has since become an ambassador for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
