A Brazilian glamour model has been subject to ridicule after she turned the debris left behind by superstorm Sandy into the backdrop for a series of bizarre photographs. Nana Gouvêa posed on top of a fallen trees and damaged cars before posting the images on Facebook.

The 30-year-old was spotted practising her pout by passers-by who also stopped to take their own snaps and her opportunist photoshoot was mocked by Gawker, which jokingly advised her: “The turmoil following a devastating natural disaster is a great opportunity to get out there and try poses, angles, and wardrobe choices you normally wouldn’t.

“This is a time for introspection and re-examining your personal style. Also a great time to stomp all over cars and things.”

The scandal prompted Facebook and Tumblr users to set up spoof accounts. Profiles on each, both called “Nana Gouvêa in Disasters”, also mock her with images of the model superimposed over other tragic scenes. One sees her present at the sinking of the Titanic, another at the Hindenburg disaster and another still as The Lion King character Mufasa dies.

Ms Gouvea’s husband, Carlos Keyes, took the original pictures. Ms Gouvêa told Spanish magazine, EGO, that the storm has bought them closer together and “we actually spent most of the time in bed”, adding that “today I will open a bottle of wine”.

“It was my first trip to New York,” she said, “we were in his apartment, watching movies, cooking,” she said.

The storm’s death toll continues to rise after hitting America, Haiti and Cuba, among other countries. More than 50 people are known to have died and thousands of homes are underwater and millions remain without power.
