Wayne Static, the lead singer and guitarist of the metal band Static-X, has died at the age of 48.

Representatives of the musician, whose real name is Wayne Richard Wells, confirmed the news, but gave no details as to the cause of death.

Known for his gravity-defying hairstyle as much as his music, Static had been scheduled to tour with Powerman 5000 and Drowning Pool in the near future.

The metal musician formed his eponymous band, Static-X, in 1994 after disbanding his previous group, Deep Blue Dream. Static-X's debut album, Wisconsin Death Trip, went Platinum in 1999.

Static-X disbanded in 2013 but by then Static had already begun his successful Pighammer solo-project.
