Kattalin Aguirre, Resistance worker, died, aged 94. Helped hundreds of Allied aircrew to escape from France during the Second World War. As the cleaner of a hotel which housed German officers, she was a key figure in the Comet Line (based in Brussels), which fielded escaping Allied airmen from Paris and elsewhere in France and the Low Countries to the Bayonne area in the South, across the Pyrenees and then on to freedom.

Edgar Stafford Jones, civil servant, died 26 July, aged 83. As head of the finance department at the Foreign Office 1957-68, he was in charge of the special administration office set up to organise the new combined diplomatic service established in 1965. MBE 1953. CBE 1960.
