Vladislav Bogomolov, rocket engineer, died Moscow 9 February, aged 78. Helped to design the Soviet Vostok rockets, one of which carried Yuri Gagarin, the first man into space, in 1961; and engines for the Mars, Luna, and Kosmos probes.

Mario Henrique Simonsen, economist, died Rio de Janeiro 9 February, aged 61. Former Brazilian finance minister.
