Atahualpa del Cioppo, Uruguayan playwright and theatre director, died 2 October aged 89, in Havana, Cuba. Founded and directed El Galpon group, both a theatre company and an institution dedicated to promoting other arts, and was involved in a national boom in theatre. He was decorated last month with the Haydee Santamaria medal, one of the Cuban government's highest cultural awards.
