Obituary: Baroness Ewart-Biggs

ONE OF the most courageous struggles Jane Ewart-Biggs became involved with was the campaign against the death penalty, writes Frances Crook.

Her work against capital punishment stemmed from her own strong commitment, which was made all the more poignant because of her experience as a victim of terrorism. I remember her standing, braving the drizzle, in Trafalgar Square addressing an Amnesty International rally against the death penalty world-wide which I organised in the early 1980s. Her untimely death is particularly sad as we so desperately need people like Jane Ewart-Biggs, prepared to take on unpopular causes with relish, compassion and with a delicate sense of humour.
