IN HIS fascinating obituary of Ernest Hawkins (10 June), Robin Cormack does not mention Hawkins's work as an architectural sculptor, writes Peter Howell.
Examples of his craftsmanship in marble can be seen in Westminster Cathedral. Designed by the then cathedral architect, LH Shattock, they include the 'knobs' on the staircase to the pulpit, added at the time of its remodelling in 1934, and the screen to St Patrick's Chapel. Bentley's daughter, Winefride de l'Hopital, disliked this so much that she wanted it removed, but, whatever one may think of the design, the execution is faultless.
