Harold Curtis Fleming, civil rights campaigner, died Washington DC 4 September, aged 70. An executive director of the Southern Regional Council - formed in 1944 to promote equal opportunities - he was founder of the council's Voter Education Project, set up to to get black citizens to register. Appointed head of the Potomac Institute in Washington in 1962.
